An Engineering Recruiter specializes in finding engineers usually with a hardware background. This means analog design, rf design, digital design, integrated circuit design, pcb design, etc. It also means mechanical engineers, manufacturing engineers, industrial engineers, process engineers, quality engineers and sometimes technicians and drafters.

As an engineering recruiter you need to be an engineering consultant of sorts, because you need to have the know-how to find the engineering talent that is requested of you. It has been my experience that engineering managers are delighted when they find an engineering recruiter who is actually adept at understanding the intricacies of their requirements.

With any type of engineering consulting you must be able to identify what the candidate is doing on a daily basis. For example, if they are designing something it is good to know what they are designing, how small or how large it is, size wise and data wise, materials used, are they designing a prototype, next generation, or maintaining an existing product, and what are they doing in terms of this design on a daily basis. You also need to know how much experience they must have, the degree and certifications, and what industry the product will be used in. Finally, what area of expertise do they need, electrical, mechanical, and what specialty, analog, digital, rf, and so forth? The drill does not stop there. Once you find all of this out you then need to ask the customer what will the person really be doing, what other team members will they be working with and reporting to, and what are the must have skills and the dream list skills.

You will find there are few true engineering staffing companies, because of the difficulty in understanding the engineering requirements.
