As an IT Recruiter these are the positions I see companies having difficulty finding.
One of the really hot positions today is Data Warehousing, someone who does data analysis, data modeling, dimensional modeling, star schemas, error handling, working within the ETL process to perform activities which make the data secure and easily accessible to certain members within an organization. Software used to assist is ERWIN, Informatica, Terradata and so forth.
Another hot IT recruiting requirement is DBA’s. There are a lot of different DBA positions. Some of the most popular ones we see are SQL DBA’s, MySQL DBA’s and ORACLE DBA’s. Less frequent are PeopleSoft and Sybase DBA’s. There are probably others too, but these are the ones we see most frequently. A Database Administrator does installation, configuration, performance tuning and query optimization in addition to stored procedures, clustering and other activities.
Other popular IT recruiting positions are enterprise resource planning (ERP) Systems positions. Some of the most frequently used ones are SAP, ORACLE and PeopleSoft. These positions are broken down into all sorts of sub specialties where modules are developed for specific areas, such as financial, human resources, sales distribution, manufacturing, warehousing and purchasing. Next, the IT recruiter needs to identify if the requirement is technical or functional. There is a huge difference here and this needs to be identified by the recruiter in advance.
Business Analyses and Systems Analyses are also requirements that an IT recruiter will come across. Here the analyst is working with the end users to identify what their needs are and how the system software is used to accommodate those needs.
Networking and data storage are also IT recruiting company requirements. Network Engineers mainly deal with connectivity issues, performance tuning, security, disaster recovery, communication protocols, fax, email, firewall, virus software, cabling, and other 3rd party hardware and software tools. Data Storage is storage administration for SAN, NAS and CAS infrastructure. Some popular applications used are EMC:Symmetrix, CLARiiON, Celerra, NET APP: FAS, and BROCADE: Directors and Discreet Switches, and technologies such as FC, FCIP, CIFS, NFS, SRDF/A, Snapmirror, SnapRestore, SnapVault, ECC, DFM, SANscreen, Storage Scope, MSCS, VMware ESX, VMware Server, and VCB.
Finally, there are Systems Administrators. Popular Systems Administrators are Microsoft Systems Admins and all flavors of Unix Systems Admins, like LINUX, SUN SOLARIS, HP UX, IBM AS 400 and Silicon Graphics IRIX. Systems Administrators work with the operating system doing software installation, systems performance, storage, disaster recovery, email, end user problems and so forth.
